Birmingham food podcast Breaking Bread episode with Craft Birmingham owner Sam Morgan

Welcome Sam Morgan Craft Birmingham

Hello & a very warm welcome back to our podcast all about the amazing food & people of Birmingham. This week we are lucky to be joined by Sam Morgan, owner of canal-side restaurants Craft & Eight.

Sam opened Craft dining rooms at the heart of Birmingham’s symphony hall back in 2018. Things got off to a shaky start before some advice from a close friend made Sam reevaluate everything.

Big Changes For Craft

“Just because you like to eat out, is not a reason to buy a restaurant,” Sam tells us, with all the wisdom of somebody who done just that. Fortunately, Sam was able to put his ego aside & take on board some stern advice from a very experienced restauranteur friend.

Sam freely admits that this advice & the changes implemented after changed the fortunes of Craft Birmingham, and likely saved it.

Sam & Andy

Shortly after Sam went in search of an ambitious chef who would help him drive Craft forward. It wasn’t long before he met mega talented Great British Menu chef Andrew Sheridan.

The pair hit it off instantly. Constantly bouncing ideas off one another the pair came up with some exciting plans for Craft. Even with the pandemic the pair have stayed focused and managed to execute some of those plans, including, opening another restaurant inside Craft. The impressive Michelin contender 8. This is episode 1 of covid-19 help for hospitality and is with corporate lawyer Michael Buckworth. Michael, the managing director of Buckworths, has a huge breadth of experience advising startups and high growth companies in a range of sectors including technology, fin-tech, digital and hospitality. Named as “Corporate Lawyer of the Year” for the past four years, he spends much of his time advising clients on corporate and commercial strategy as well as dealing with other issues facing their businesses.

Michael read law at Merton College, Oxford University from where he graduated with an LLB (Hons) degree. He qualified and worked at the London offices of two top US law firms before setting up Buckworths in 2011.

Buckworths is the only firm in the market working exclusively with startups and high growth businesses. Its sister company, Buckworths Compliance provides tailored advice to startups and high growth businesses on compliance with GDPR and the wider data protection regime.

I speak to Michael about the help and grants being offered to businesses by the government and how to apply for them, and how best from a legal point of view do businesses deal with the current crisis. Welcome to the latest episode of the Breaking Bread Podcast with Carl & Liam. This week we sit down for a great chat with Lassi based Crazy Gin creators Paramjit & Bruce.

Crazy Gin An Indian British Fusion

They talk us through their story and their inspiration for taking an Indian British fusion upbringing and distilling it into a gin.

From a drunken night in with some rubbish chicken tikka to road trips across the country becoming the talk of one of Britain’s best-known stores, Harvey Nichols.

Iconic Crazy Gin Bottle

This episode goes into great detail about taking an idea, developing it into a product and then getting it out there, a very useful story for somebody doing the same.
