Welcome Frankie & Becky Ba-Ha Vegan Food Birmingham

Hello & a very warm welcome back to our podcast all about the amazing food & people of Birmingham. This week we are lucky to be joined by Frankie & Becky creators of the awesome humane/vegan food brand Ba-Ha.

Ba-Ha has done a number of pop-ups & festivals all over Birmingham. Ba-Ha became famous for creating delicious vegan alternatives to some well-known comfort foods.

Why Did You Create Ba-Ha?

For too long guests with a vegan or plant-based diet was an afterthought for restaurants. Tired of only having one choice when dining out, usually a sad pasta or stuffed pepper dish Frankie & Becky went on a mission to create yummy & exciting vegan food.

Working across the city, doing pop-ups & festivals, Ba-Ha quickly gained a loyal fanbase in Birmingham. Signature dishes such as Bish & Chips a vegan take on fish & chips, vegan roast dinner & sticky wings have gone down a storm with vegans & meat-eaters alike.

Ba-Ha Restaurant Birmingham

As much as Frankie & Becky enjoy doing residencies & pop-ups, a restaurant of their own is still the dream. A place of their own to showcase their flavor-packed dishes alongside a bar serving the best vegan beers, wines & cocktails, for a complete experience.

Birmingham food podcast Breaking Bread episode with Craft Birmingham owner Sam Morgan

Welcome Sam Morgan Craft Birmingham

Hello & a very warm welcome back to our podcast all about the amazing food & people of Birmingham. This week we are lucky to be joined by Sam Morgan, owner of canal-side restaurants Craft & Eight.

Sam opened Craft dining rooms at the heart of Birmingham’s symphony hall back in 2018. Things got off to a shaky start before some advice from a close friend made Sam reevaluate everything.

Craft Birmingham luxury outside dining pods

Big Changes For Craft

“Just because you like to eat out, is not a reason to buy a restaurant,” Sam tells us, with all the wisdom of somebody who done just that. Fortunately, Sam was able to put his ego aside & take on board some stern advice from a very experienced restauranteur friend.

Sam freely admits that this advice & the changes implemented after changed the fortunes of Craft Birmingham, and likely saved it.

Sam & Andy

Shortly after Sam went in search of an ambitious chef who would help him drive Craft forward. It wasn’t long before he met mega talented Great British Menu chef Andrew Sheridan.

The pair hit it off instantly. Constantly bouncing ideas off one another the pair came up with some exciting plans for Craft. Even with the pandemic the pair have stayed focused and managed to execute some of those plans, including, opening another restaurant inside Craft. The impressive Michelin contender 8. Alex Claridge Show Notes

We are delighted to be joined again by Alex. 2020 has been a challenging year for everybody, especially for the hospitality industry. Despite a complete lack of evidence, hospitality is continuously scapegoated by this government as a risk of infection.

From the start of the pandemic, Alex has been at the center of every campaign and petition. Fighting ferociously for the industry he loves. This made Alex a natural choice to guest our first episode back after lockdown.

An awesome conversation all about these last fifteen months, preparing for the future and the exciting changes and improvements we can expect when visiting The Wilderness.

We are delighted to finally have a new episode for you today, after so long off due to the pandemic. Our guest today is Tom Kidd, co-founder of the hugely popular Adventure Bars Group. The outdoor cinema from new Birmingham bar Luna Springs Digbeth

Beer Garden With Cocktails & Events

A vast space with a capacity for 2,500 guests, Luna Springs Digbeth is a versatile venue with lots of exciting potentials. With bottomless brunches and DJs offering a great bar experience Tom hopes to introduce more events in the near future. An orchestra-backed cinema experience and live gigs already in the pipeline, Tom believes Luna will evolve to be a creative hub of excitement.

Food & Drink

With such a vast space, with such a variety of events and uses Luna Digbeth decided that the F&B offering was going to be a high standard, far more superior to the usual offerings at event spaces. So whether you’re coming with a group of mates for some sunshine day drinking, an orchestra-backed cinema night, or a live gig. The awesome drinks menu heavily focused on excellent cocktails will always be available.

For food, Luna will host a variety of street food vendors. Using, and supporting local traders has been very important to owner Tom, and is on a mission to support as many as possible. At the moment you can grab some fried chicken from the brilliant Mother Clucker or some slice from pizza legends Hand Made Pizza Co.

Bacchus Bar Running A Bar In Birmingham City Centre During A Pandemic

Manager Of Birmingham City Centre Bacchus Bar On The Latest Episode Of Birmingham Food Podcast Breaking Bread

Hello & a very warm welcome back to Breaking Bread the podcast all about the amazing food & drink in Birmingham. This week Carl & Liam are joined by Liam’s very good friend & gaffer of Bacchus Bar, the awesome city centre boozer just off New St

Brendan has worked in pubs & bars for over 20 years and has won awards & recognition for investing in his team & turning struggling pubs around. Liam & Brendan take a fun trip down memory lane to where they first met, in a cheesy Solihull bar in 2006. They reminisce on some funny memories (not so funny at the time) during their time working at Weatherspoons.

Brendan offers some great advice & talks deeply about hospitality management and what it has been like to run a city-centre pub during covid before offering a fresh take on Tripadvisor which might make you realise that it may be more beneficial to work with Tripadvisor, as opposed to just hating on it.

TripAdvisor Facts

Love it or hate it, you had better be paying attention to what customers are saying about you on TripAdvisor. If you’re not, you are more than likely losing out on money.

A recent study had some fascinating results

  • 80% Of people asked, read at least 6-12 reviews prior to booking
  • 53% Would’t commit to booking before reading a review
  • 64% read reviews to find a restaurant

An example of the power of TripAdvisor can be found closer to home. In 2019 Michelin Star restaurant Adams was voted best restaurant in the UK by TripAdvisor. The very next day after the award being announced, Adams received 200 bookings.

Mental Health

In our podcast, Andy very bravely opened up about some of his problems with mental health. Recent figures show as many as 1 in 2 employees in hospitality suffer from mental health issues. It’s a huge problem that just doesn’t get talked about or highlighted enough!

Fortunately, there are a few amazing people trying to highlight these issues. Pilot Light Campaign is a global social impact initiative committed to raising awareness of mental health and providing greater support to the hospitality sector.

What To Expect From 670 Grams?

In this week’s episode, we welcome back mega-talented Kray Treadwell. The former head chef of Michelin Starred Man Behind The Curtain, and finalist of BBCs Great British Menu is back to tell us all about 670 Grams, his brand new restaurant.

Kray is on a mission to bring the fine dining experience to a brand new audience, with an emphasis on quality food & drink at an affordable price. The menu is an ever-changing 10-course tasting menu costing just £60. Inspired by foods “I just like eating” such as the fried chicken-esque veal popcorn, or the bread/cheese/spring onion course derived from the humble Tesco cheese & onion sandwich.
